ABOUT BURRA
Burra is a town steeped in history and heritage.
After the discovery of copper ore in 1845 the town grew rapidly and by 1851 it had a population greater than Brisbane and Perth combined.
Over the next 32 years the Monster Mine as it was known produced ore worth over three hundred million dollars. The thousands of Cornish, Scottish, Welsh and English miners who flocked there all left a unique mark on the architecture and heritage of the town.
Today much of that heritage is still intact; in fact Burra is one of the world’s best preserved colonial communities.
A Burra Heritage Passport Tour will take you through the many pioneer streets, cottages, churches, museums, the gaol and the Monster Mine itself.
Burra was declared a State Heritage area in 1993.
